Nearby new digs include additional space for special events: Live music, cigar rolling, movie nights and more
Jackson, Miss., June 27, 2018—The Country Squire, Mississippi’s oldest tobacconist store, specializing in pipes and cigars and hand-blended tobacco, announces a move to larger quarters in the same plaza.
The new home for The Country Squire will continue to be in the Quarter Shopping Center, at 1855 Lakeland Drive, Jackson, Miss., 39216, in Suite C10—two doors down from its original location. The new location will feature a larger humidor, an expanded lounge, and an upgraded outdoor seating area. Additionally, the shop will expand its special events offerings, including live music, cigar rolling and movie nights.
The Jackson, Miss., fixture first opened its doors in August 1970, with owners Jim and Gwen Reeves. The Country Squire has continuously operated, with a smooth handoff in 2016 to Jon David Cole, former store manager and now the owner.
“It’s very bittersweet for me to move locations,” Cole said. “On one hand, we’ll have a great new space that is larger than our existing location, allowing us to serve more clients—not just here, but all over the world. We will be able to offer our fellowship of clients more events to congregate here and share in not just our offerings, but to participate in the exciting renaissance of Jackson.”
He added: “On the other hand, we’re giving up the history of our original shop where people like Jerry Clower, Willie Morris, countless state politicians, professional athletes, authors and occasional actors have stopped in and called our shop home. One client remembers watching from in here the horse Secretariat win the Triple Crown. You can still see the waterline of the great Easter Flood of 1979 on the old brick walls.”
However, Cole said he’s excited about preserving those memories while also creating new ones, since the institution that’s The Country Squire is about more than just a physical place. “I’m very excited about the ability to expand the business and welcome new clientele from Jackson and around the world,” he said. “At our new location, we shall add to our shop’s history and still be ‘home’ to our clients.”
The Quarter Shopping Center is newly purchased by State Street Group. The Country Squire shares its location with businesses such as Wine and Spirits in the Quarter, Cups Coffee and others. State Street Group has begun to renovate and revitalize this section of the city, contributing to the Jackson Renaissance. The location is one of the highest traffic corridors in the city, and State Street Group is adding living quarters for apartments above the retail businesses, to create a true mixed-use location to enrich the area.
