  1. Kevin

Bag End is my favorite “Light Latakia” blend. I’m not a huge fan of very strong English blends or lots of Latakia in general. This blend is the perfect balance of Latakia, Virginias, and Orientals for me. It’s mellow and smoky and perfect for quiet contemplative pipe smoking sessions. It’s not for every day, but there are days when it’s the only blend I want. A must try for every pipe smoker!

  2. Kevin

The description is spot on. Perfect blend for a contemplative evening. Nuanced and well balanced. This is a permanent fixture in my cellar.

  3. Josh Bishop

Bag End has become my go-to tobacco. It’s a solid, dependable, pleasant nonaromatic. Highly recommended.

  4. Mike Troiber

I love english blends, and this one is amazing. This is what hobbits smoke on cold winter nights tucked away in there holes. I could ramble on about this for quite some time. Suffice it to say this is a superb tobacco and will be in my regular line up.

I bought an oz of Bag End to try after reading the description. I greatly enjoyed the other tobaccos in my order, but have decided after years of searching that this is my blend. I plan on ordering a pound in the future. As the description notes, this is a complex blend but also incredibly rewarding. So many wonderful flavors with the perfect amount of Latakia.

Tobacco reviewers are limited by their own palate, the preference and predisposition. Further limiting are mixtures that are far enough off the beaten track so as to defy simple categorization. We can all readily agree on what makes an aromatic, for example, but what precisely divides english mixtures from scottish, or balkan?
Regardless of which faction you side with in what is really an ongoing contention, Bag End should fall nicely in the scottish genre for most of us, with its muted, more subtle use of latakia and the addition of a very nice burley. The orientals used here okay nicely with the virginia, giving each careful puff a sweet/sour interplay.
The prevalence of virginia here means that it’ll get really hot really fast with reckless puffing. Exuberant smokers will freight-train right past Bag End’s subtleties and think it pointless, but sipping this mixture, one finds the idea of a comfortable fire in a warm and cozy hobbit hole tremendously appealing.

I have found this tobacco to be a pleasure to smoke. It has a subtle sweetness to it that comes out especially when smoked slowly. It can have a bit of a bite when it gets too hot so if you’re not in a hurry, (which why would you be if you’re smoking a pipe) it’s great. Now that I’m at the end of my bag I suppose it should get more…bag end that is!

I was looking for a replacement for Frog Morton, and this wasn’t it. However, it is the absolute equal to my other favorite…Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River, maybe even a bit smoother. A nice creamy, smokey flavor with enough Orientals to add some spice, without any of the tobaccos being over-the-top. A nice all-day smoke. This is now in my permanent rotation. It is also similar to Comoy’s Cask #11. An outstanding smoke.

I like the look of the ready rubbed Virginia’s. A thick looking blend that’s inviting from the 1st glance of the bag. The aroma and taste is reminiscent of my morning smoke in which I’ve been looking for a replacement. Lighter on the latakia but it’s there in the amount I enjoy and sometimes prefer over a heavier blend. There’s a sweetness to it and a spicy note from time to time and the latakia shines in the back ground if you sip it, though I taste it regardless but it is better sipped. When I pull hard on the drag it smokes hot but has a hardy tobacco taste that i like and tingles the nasals on the retro-hale. It’s so enjoyable no matter how I smoke it. The description says it’s a Scottish blend but I’m calling it my new morning blend. Is Bag End for the end of the day or an all day smoke? I say both please and thank you!

My favorite blend so far. It’s easy to smoke, flavorful, complex, delicious, creamy and warm. I’m eager to try other Country Squire blends as well!

Normally I can’t stand blends with latakia. Bag End flips the script! I was totally surprised at how flavorful and enticing this blend is. The latakia is almost like a condiment providing aroma and a richness but does not punch me in the nose.. Instead of tasting like an acrid ashtray (how latakia typically tastes on my palate), Bag End is smooth and rich and satisfying.

Reminds me of sitting by the fireplace on a crisp winter’s day. Brings back memories of my father, and firewood and good memories.

    A new favorite.

This is my second tobacco I have tried from The Country Squire. Angry Cornishman being the first. Really enjoyed Bag End. I found it to be incredibly well balanced and a pleasure to sip. Nothing seems to be fighting for center stage with this blend and that’s what I love about it. Has a slight peppery taste but also a subtle sweetness as well. Very well rounded and easily one of the most enjoyable bowls I’ve had in awhile. I finished feeling so relaxed. Smoked it in a Fat Author and it seemed like the perfect blend to have in that pipe. Just sipped away after a light rain tonight and it was perfect! So pleased with the tobacco I have purchased and have already bought more to try. Definitely give this one a try! Awaiting my next bowl of Bag End!

First impression: I’ve been a pipe smoker for about half a century, and I love Scottish blends. This one looks like a winner==sweet with that Oriental tang I look for. Nice work, JDC!

I’m a relatively new smoker, and the Middle-Earth sampler along with Captain Black and some older tobaccos my brother had in a jar from a local shop in Tombstone, AZ, are all I have really tried. But I have to say that out of everything I’ve smoked so far–and I’ve found that my palette tends toward aromatics like Old Toby and Second Breakfast–but out of everything I’ve tried, the Bag End blend is absolutely amazing. I’ve heard and read a lot about latakia and was a little hesitant to try it, but gotdamn, this was the best smoke I’ve had so far, along with the Old Toby. I honestly can’t even explain it, but smoking it just brought me so much joy, warmth, and comfort. It definitely lives up to its namesake, because I could see Bilbo smoking this while pouring over old maps of the Lonely Mountain. I will definitely be getting more!

Though I often have good tobacco it isn’t often that I find a blend that makes me say “I need to make sure I always have some of this on tap”

This is one of those blends. A wonderful flavor and an easy smoke. I’ve smoked it in my churchwarden, which I feel is only fitting for these middle earth blends, and I’ve smoked it in my other pipes… it has always been a delight.

I’m not often easily pleased. I normally find myself bouncing from tin to tin because I get tired of the same stuff over and over. However, since I got Bag End I grab it almost EVERY time and I am already out. I will be buying more. It’s the perfect balance of sweet with just a touch of spice and sour! Plus there’s just enough smokiness in the flavor to round everything out. This could be an anytime of day smoke or even an all day kind of tobacco, but for me if I find myself busy doing other stuff and getting a little too distracted from my pipe I will heat it up just a little too much, but as for me if I’m smoking bag end I want to be focused anyway because it is so delicious!

I don’t mean to be harsh, but this blend IMO tastes like a dryer sheet. Very chemically. I mean I can pick out specific notes that would be enjoyable but the overall flavor is not something I enjoy.

  19. Christopher Grafing (verified owner)

This has become my new bedtime blend. It’s so easy to nod off in my chair while I’m finishing a bowl of Bag End while wrapping up a TV show before bed.
The description is appropriate, this is a blend for long, slow-sipping contemplation. If relaxation is your goal, I think Bag End is just the ticket to get you there.

Great tobacco for unwinding at the end of a long hard day.

I’m a new smoker, about three months in, so I’m still in exploration and discover mode.
Bag End was the first non-aromatic tobacco I tasted, and I can only say that I liked deeply.
Bag End and Old Toby have become my favorite tobaccos, I can even say that, since I tasted them, I am not smoking any other tobacco.

Almost smells and tastes like hints of Earl Grey Tea are hanging in the air. Very pleasant tobacco and a smooth smoke.
