Would recommend this blend to anyone who wants a warm, rounded, smooth mouth feel with a bit of sweetness. Very tasty and not harsh at all. Notes of cocoa and earth in there as well.

  2. Jeff

Friend and I are long time fans of the LOTR series, one night while watching one of the movies and having a few beers decided to look up and see if anyone made any pipes from the movies as well as if there was any tobaccos that where out there. Sure enough, found this and ordered some right there. It has become our favorite tobacco blend and every time that we meet we have to sit down for some Old Toby.

  3. Mark Fresa (verified owner)

It’s no wonder Gandalf offered Old Toby to Radagast during the Hobbit movie to calm his nerves. This is a delicious blend that will banish negative forces from your mind! My personal favorite.

  4. John (verified owner)

I wouldn’t claim that this is “the finest weed in all of the south farthing”, but it’s pretty close. Once you get it going, this is a delicious smoke, especially after dinner.

  5. Jason Wilcox

I don’t know about all the nuances of tobacco reviews, but I will say Old Toby is the best tasting tobacco I’ve ever smoked. may have to relight or dry out or whatever but as far a taste, best I’ve tasted’

  6. Patrick A. Johnson (verified owner)

The ONLY problem with this blend is that it is so d_mn good, and you’ll likely find yourself smoking nothing else if you are a fan of aromatics. All kidding aside, this is a must own blend if you are in to aromatics.

  7. Mark (verified owner)

Must say that Old Toby is the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked, and it has definitely opened my eyes (and palate) to some wonderful flavors. My wife doesn’t like the other blends as well as this one, so I try to smoke some for her when she is in the garden. Highly recommended.

  8. John Shore (verified owner)

An excellent smoke at the end of a long day at work.

I can only imagine if I died suddenly & instead of calling the hearse they lit some Ol’ Toby nearby I’d sit bolt upright & pass my pipe along for a bowlful! It’s heaven; my new favorite pipe tobacco by a mile!

  11. roch.martin (verified owner)

just perfect ! received it this morning in France ^^

With the loss of McClelland, I was looking for a replacement for my beloved Frog Mortons. Someone recommended Shepards Pie, but I ran across Old Toby, and it sounded intriguing. I was not disappointed.. It’s not the Frog, but in it’s own way, it is every bit as good. I6 has a nutty, sweet taste with overtones of spices. It is my new favorite. No latakia in this blend, but it doesn’t really need it. It is very complex all on its own.

  13. Dennis W. Young (verified owner)

I’m New to pipe smoking, but this blend is wonderful! Smooth with absolutely no bite…at all! Wonderful aroma. Gandalf would be pleased. ??

  14. Anthony Rosenthal (verified owner)

This is without a doubt one of the greatest aromatic tobaccos I’ve ever smoked. The blend comes quite moist, and I was afraid it wouldn’t burn well without quite a bit of drying time, but surprisingly still manages to burn quite well and without bite. It’s certainly a sweet one, and each draw on the pipe seems to sprinkle a little sugary mist on the tongue. The sweet taste is matched by a lovely room note promising to please anyone nearby as well as the smoker. It’s a wonderful blend for sitting outside the hobbit hole on a cool night with a hot coffee.

  15. Marcus (verified owner)

I’ve been smoking Old Toby for some time now, and It is still my favorite by far. Being a major fan of Lord of the Rings, it is truly fantastic. And the blend is almost perfect in my mind. I don’t really buy any other kinds anymore…just Old Toby.

  16. Isaac (verified owner)

I’m relatively new to pipe smoking, but have recently been on something of a tour of some of the more popular aromatics. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve sampled nine highly recommended aromatics from several of the major companies. I keep coming back to Old Toby as my favorite. It is smooth, smells amazing, and is pleasantly smokey whether sitting on the back porch or out on walkabout to do some lunting. I greatly enjoy the sweetness of this blend, and my wife never complains about the smell. Merry and Pippin knew what they were talking about!

  17. Mike (verified owner)

    Excellent tobacco..
    A little wet. Stayed lit.
    Nice smoke for all day.
The perique balances the smoke nicely .

  18. Justinjaredjoyner (verified owner)

I’ve come back to the pipe after 10 years and I’m writing this as I’m smoking Old Toby for the first time. I was excited by these LOTR brands and wanted to give some a try.

I was a bit concerned with the addition of Perique due to an unpleasant experience with Perique additions to cigarettes in the past (yes, I know: apples n oranges!) but I was happy to discover that the addition rounds out the sweetness very effectively. A bit of Perique in an aromatic blend? Hell yes!

The tobacco is moist so it went it frequently but I’ll get the hang of it.

All in all you get a heavenly rich smooth smoke, lovely aromatic flavours, and an overall fantastic smoking experience. Perfect for newcomers!— don’t let them try anything else for the first time!

Lastly, my order came super fast—can’t complain!

Can’t wait to explore other tobaccos here!

    Cheers from California—

    Happy Spring!

I’m a returning pipe smoker and was looking for a quality aromatic. Being a LOTR fan, as well, I searched LOTR tobacco and found the C.S.!
Old Toby is sweet, fruity, and peppery with a thick smoke that never bites—even once!

I had to relight it many times due to the moisture but I eventually got the hang of how much/little air it took to keep things going consistently.

I was worried about Perique being added to the mix due to an unpleasant experience with Perique in the past. But… this peppery addition really rounded out the sweetness in a delightful and surprising way!

Maybe a tad overly sweet for me, so this smoke will do good after a nice evening meal when you have a full hour to let this smoke weave it’s spell on you!

  20. Robert Dotson (verified owner)

I have tried all of the Middle Earth blends that are offered here and I must say that Old Toby takes the cake. I love the flavor and the aroma. As others have said, no tongue bite, a little on the sweet side. I think it all depends on your tastes. I purchased small amounts of all the Middle Earth blends to that I could try them all out to see which one I liked the most. The other blends are good too! This one just keeps me coming back for more. Definitely worth a try!!

  21. Sean Fulghum (verified owner)

This is a wonderful aromatic that’s sweet with a little kick. I didn’t let it dry and just popped some in my Duke and away we went. It sizzles since it is a little wet but still tastes wonderful. This is definitely gonna be in my rotation from here on out.

  22. Gabriel Theodoulos

A kind-hearted soul sent me a package of tobaccos, one of which was Old Toby. After starting up The Hobbit movie, I pulled out this blend and smoked a pipe-full. I am immediately hooked! Old Toby is a fresh and gentle aromatic, with hints of cocoa and possibly mint (?). It is oh so smooth, I nursed a bowl for almost an entire hour! Cursed am I not to be able to afford a whole mountain of this wonderful blend! It has become my new favorite!

  23. Erika Rivertree (verified owner)

My new fave tobacco blend! The aroma of Old Toby is scrumptious! And the taste… wow! This is a superb smoke! Luxurious, creamy plumes of smoke, with a smooth and deep, earthy-sweet flavor, but not cloying or goopy. I tried my first bowl of this in a Flogglewerks Tauriel pipe (cuz, LOTR, y’know). Oh yeah; Old Toby is mos def “the finest weed in the Southfarthing”. ???

  24. Tyler Detmer

Wow this blend completely exceeded my expectations. I am a new pipe smoker and before ordering from this shop I bought a couple cheap pouches of aromatic stuff. When I smoked my first bowl of Old Toby I was absolutely amazed at how delicious it tasted compared to the stuff I had tried. And it left such a warm pleasant feeling in my mouth, at that moment I knew I would never buy crappy cheap tobaccos from the beer n wine store again. This blend is 100% worthy of the name Old Toby. Gandalf would be proud!

  25. Aaron (verified owner)

I’ve only tried around 20 blends of tobacco in my life, but after finding Old Toby I’m giving most of the rest away. This blend is just so DELICIOUS and perfectly behaved. Usually you have to be extra careful to avoid tongue bite with a tobacco that is as heavily cased as this one, but this beauty hasn’t bitten me once! I’ve tried in numerous pipes from a huge Lord of the Rings “Aragorn” style churchwarden down to a little bent bulldog and it has burned perfectly and tasted simply wonderful in all of them. Although it seems very wet and sticky in the bag/jar/receptacle, I’ve still been able to put it into a pipe and smoke it without drying it out before hand and in most cases that has worked. It very easily burns down to a fine ash and provides a very long and satisfying smoke. I can’t praise Old Toby enough; it’s become my “desert island” tobacco. As soon as the pocketbook allows, I plan on stocking up on this to age several jars worth. If you like aromatics, this is a MUST try!

  26. Jeremy Stevens (verified owner)

I tried smoking a pipe years ago; and I’ve come to realize that cheap Discount Store / gas station tobacco is the reason I didn’t take to it. After a good bit of research I ordered 1 ounce of Ole’ Toby as my re-introduction to smoking a pipe.
I couldn’t be more pleased! I’m no connoisseur by any means, but I can tell you this: Smells amazing, and tastes just as good to me. I will definitely be ordering more soon, as well as trying some of the other house blends.

  27. Jack (verified owner)

Amazing taste and room note, extremely easy on the tongue and you don’t have to go searching for the different flavors like so many other aromatics. The room note made my girlfriend want me to smoke much more often!

  28. Scott Mickle (verified owner)

I’m relatively new to pipe smoking and this is one of my favorite tobaccos so far. I decided to give this a try mainly because of my love for the works of Tolkien. I was not disappointed! It has a sweet earthy quality that I absolutely love! I also get notes of cocoa and some sort of baking spice. It smokes cool and the room note is wonderful! Really comes alive in my churchwarden, but is enjoyable any time of day in my other pipes. Will definitely be purchasing more in the future!

  29. Jerry McNeely (verified owner)

Without a doubt, hands down the best aromatic I’ve ever smoked. Now that my stimulus check has finally showed up, I ordering a pound.

  30. Tex

Excellent blend. Cool smoking and wonderful taste. Like Rivendell, I forgot to mention in my other review, let it dry out for a few hours. More enjoyable smoke.

The LOTR stuff is excellent Marketing and definitely a dork fest (I’m admittedly a LOTR dork as well.)

And the marketing works. It stood out by name as something really unique. It also led me to this shop. Win win for all.

Don’t let the dork factor keep you away. These are damn fine blends , fan of the name or not.

  31. Paul Mathews (verified owner)

Finally got the chance to try Old Toby. After all the good reviews, I have to admit to being a little impatient so I only let it dry for a couple of hours, but that didn’t seem to be a problem. I really didn’t know what to expect so I tried not to form any expectations based on the name. It smoked cool with no tongue bite. It was sweet and mellow; just what a hobbit would want in a tobacco.

While I have a fondness for aromatics, I really prefer to taste the tobacco. You get that with Old Toby. As a plus, the smell and the taste are in sync. I definitely will be buying more. I can’t wait to try my other selections from The Country Squire.

  32. Christian (verified owner)

First time smoker from germany here. Can not complain. Love the taste, how it wanders the room.. Feels earthy, but in a summer-evening way. A warm summer evening, where you sit ouside on your bank, golden-orange sun shining upon you, leaning backwards and watching the sun sinking. You can almost hear the bees and birds around you and your garden happily growing.
The LOTR-name surely has done its part to bring up these images, but the taste executed them into a feeling.
While this will probably be my only ever bought tobacco, I already know, it’s always going to be a real pleasure if I decide to smoke a pipe.

A very delicious and sweet pipe tobacco! Excellent room note, and leaves you smelling kind of sweet as well. The perique adds a bit of depth to the tobacco, and adds a very nice zing to the retrohale. Already have a dedicated jar for this stuff!

  34. Daniel Whitfield (verified owner)

While I have had a pipe for about 10 years.. I consider myself a novice. I only smoke on occasion and was in a rut with my smoke choices. I joined an online group and I took some advise and tried the Old Toby … WOW .. what a nice smoke … smooth and delicious… online ordering was easy, and arrived at my doorstep across country way faster than I thought it would … customer service seems top notch.. the country squire has a new faithful customer.

  35. David (verified owner)

    Fantastic tobacco!
Sweet and tasty with zero bite.
One of the best I’ve had!

  36. It’s like smoking Nutella (verified owner)

It’s exactly what I want in an aromatic but could never find. It tastes as good as it smells, burns consistently all the way to the bottom of the bowl, and has no bite. I can’t recommend this enough.

  37. Kevin Buller

I have tried a few over the years, and this is the one I want to stick with. Nice mellow smoke once you get it going. Get a nice big bowl full in my wizards cob church warden and it is the perfect way to end the day, sitting around a fire with a beer and a nice smoke.

  38. Adam (verified owner)

Amazing. Just amazing. This is absolutely my new go to blend. This really should have been called something like “my precious”. This half pound will be stored in the fancy antique blue mason jars in my tobacco cellar that totally isn’t a cardboard box in a closet.

  39. Giles (verified owner)

Taste is smooth and soulful. Nothing less than a splendid experience. In addition, my wife, who can be quite critical of what she considers unpleasant tobacco “smells”, loves the subtle aroma. Suffice it to say OT is my new go to smoke.

  40. Dennis (verified owner)

Just received old toby today, Waiting for this weekend to give it a try as a first time pipe smoking, it smells wonderful and looking forward to it!!

  41. Katie Young (verified owner)

Smooth, sweet, and goes perfectly with a strong cup of tea. This will definitely be a stable in my cabinet from now on! Cool smoke and no bite, this is the perfect tobacco to end the day with

  42. Fool of a Took

I’m currently sitting on a field of victory, enjoying some well earned comforts! Among which, Old Toby will definitely take its place. This blend was wonderful, held its moisture, and was smooth and delightfully (but not too) sweet.

    Don’t leave home without it!

  43. Geoffrey (verified owner)

Absolutely amazing smoke!! Sweet and smoky and a little kick from the perique. Definitely moved up to the top of my favorites from the Middle Earth series. Very well done Jon David!!

  44. Kenneth Canterbury (verified owner)

All of the hype is true. One of the best aromatics you will ever taste.
It is a great morning tobacco with a nice cup of coffee or a cup of tea.

There is a complexity that you don’t taste in other aromatics. No heavy casing or flavors, just a underlying sweetness.

My only complaint is that I didn’t order nearly enough. I will need to buy at least 1.lbs of this and Shepherd Pie every order.

  45. Joe Swanson (verified owner)

Old Toby has the perfect blend of smooth and sweet taste. No other taste is like it. One puff of this and all turns to silver glass, you are sitting on the white shores of the gray havens. This is the only tobaco I will be smoking from now on. It’s a must buy! 10 stars if I could give it!!

  46. Ted (verified owner)

I have over 47 different tobaccos in my current cellar( and still growing). I have two favorites that I keep coming back to, and Old Toby is one of the two. Just checked my supply, and need to order some more before I run out. Highly recommended!!!

  47. Kyle Allmond (verified owner)

I have smoked for years and have tried many many different types of tobacco I have liked many but for the first time, I have found one that I can truly say I love. This has to be some of the mellowest and smoothest I have had the pleasure of smoking it is sweet and mild and a joy to smoke the moisture content is perfect for smoking and lights easily. I can honestly say I have found the last tobacco I will ever need to buy if you want to do yourself a favor join with Bilbo and have some of the finest leaf out of the Southfarthing.

  48. Scott Godlewski (verified owner)

This is the fabled tastes-just-like-it-smells blend. This is a requisite smoke for the aromatic fan.

  49. ianmastin117 (verified owner)

This is a great aromatic blend, Before opening the bag the smell reminded me of vanilla but after opening and giving it a good smell it smells more like a blend of honey and vanilla. As others here have said Old Toby tastes every bit as good as it smells and if this is what the hobbits of the shire were smoking I can see why it was an instant favorite. The tobacconist at The Country Squire has done a fantastic job with this blend and I will be ordering more to put in the cellar very shortly.

  50. nickheadmyers

Now that I have Old Toby the only thing I rwgret is that I bought only 4Oz, must have bought more!
Tastes great, sweet , sugary, nutty, tastes like woods on the Autumn season, I also get a taste of Honey and Cloves, maybe even cinnamon.
Smokes evenly, doesn’t bite and burn at all!
Room note – Amazing! ( P.s. as a bearded man I also consider what notes it leaves on my beard and mustache – I can’t stop smelling my mustache! Super tasty).
Tobacco is very wet, but it doesn’t interfere with a smoking process, I’d definitely dry it just a tiny bit more.
Smoked with: Peterson’s pipe of the year 2019 John Bull 999 ( no filter. Wood: Briar).
    Nicotine: Mild.
    Strength: mild/medium
    Taste and flavor: medium/strong.
Room note: very strong and very pleasant.

Old toby is the greatest i have ever had the pleasure to smoke. The customer service is the greatest that I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. The shipping was fast and the personalized note with it was the cherry on top

  52. Hunter (verified owner)

Great tobacco will definitely be getting this by the pound from now on great for putting your feet up
with a mug of ale after a long day of hard working… of hardly working

  53. Juan Ramirez (verified owner)

Wow! I’m not much of an aromatic smoker but this blend is delicious. I can’t really put into words the taste but it’s not a gross overwhelming sweetness. It’s a good balance. It also tastes just the way it smells which is awesome. This will now be my go to aromatic. My only regret is only having added one ounce to my last order. I gotta stock up on this.

  54. chamberlaindavidd (verified owner)

My all time favorite. Smokes very smooth and cool. Has a Great sweet flavor with a nice spice yet not in such a way you can’t tell you are smoking tobacco. In fact the sweet spicy cinnamon flavors complement the tobacco instead of drowning it out and it carries a decent nic hit that allows even a heavy smoker like me to find satisfaction yet not so strong I can’t smoke it on an empty belly. My only complaint which really isn’t a complaint is the moisture level on arrival. It is the single wettest tobacco I’ve ever encountered. Requiring me to leave it open in a jar 4-5 days then take my daily amount and set it out thin on a sheet the night before. While it’s a bit of a pain it also has it’s advantages as I can leave it in my antique jars and it’ll still be moist all the way to the bottom of the jar. None of my other blends last more than a few days in those jars.
I also find this blend makes both me and if she’s sitting next to me my girl friend sneeze with every lighting. Something I find more amusing than anything. You truly can’t go wrong with this blend. Though once you’ve tried it I whole heartily suggest trying it mixed with 10-20% Hunting creek. Cause whoa. That adds an entire new flavor profile to it elevating it from the best blend currently being made to the smoke of the gods🤷‍♂️ I call this mix my Adventurers blend. And it’s Devine.

  55. chestrockwell (verified owner)

Like many who have posted here, I am a long time pipe smoker and have tried just about every tobacco you can find. I can say with out a doubt the best blend of tobacco I have ever had the pleasure of putting fire to weed. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe the utter joy I get from the thought smoking this blend. It truly is everything you could ever want in a tobacco. Period. If you haven’t tried it yet then go and order just an ounce and see for yourself, be careful though, you will order another pound and it will become your new “precious”.

  56. Noah Richardson

Not much for me to say but the retrohale seems to say, Rum?

  57. Roger Hardin (verified owner)

Well rounded warm mouth feel, Pairs great with a meal before during and especially after. This tobacco smells really great in the air and smells of the old hobbiton trees in the spring OVERALL a great tobacco to enjoy.

  58. Clayton Ousley

Sweet, with cocoa, and a distinct nuttiness with sugar, cinnamon, and other fall spices. Reminds me of candied roast almonds.

No unpleasant bite, and a very pleasant aroma. A delightful smoke.

  59. Steve S. (verified owner)

Another great blend from TCS! Mild slight sweetness on the tip of the tongue followed by hints of vanilla and maple syrup. I dont pick up much of the perique. Very nice blend!

  60. nicholasblumkin (verified owner)

I’m rather new to the pipe game, and I’ve purchased a few different tobaccos, and out of all of them, this is by and far my favorite! I’ve never gotten any tongue bite from this. It’s mellow and relaxing with an amazing room note. Don’t get me wrong, Seersucker is good, but Old Toby is GREAT! This will be my go to from this point forward. I do need to try the other Middle Earth blends.

  61. Jaime Blough (verified owner)

This to me is the perfect aromatic. It smokes easy. The sweet is balanced the perique. My favorite smoke ever.

  62. Christopher Grafing (verified owner)

Profoundly delicious and extraordinarily aromatic – you’ll definitely be making friends with this blend.
The tin/bag note is almost identical to Sutliff’s Molto Dolce, seems to smoke a little sweeter (which, somehow, is a good thing) and comes at a price that I just can’t say no to.

Ordered an ounce and then immediately came back for a half pound – and I suspect I’ll be ordering more before too much time goes by.

I have dozens of blends to choose from, right at my fingertips… and yet I keep coming back to Old Toby.

The finest weed in the southfarthing, indeed.

  63. Derek Montero (verified owner)

Just enjoyed my first bowl of Old Toby. Extremely tasty!! Will need some drying time, but very much worth it. If you are an aromatic lover (even if you’re not), definitely try this blend!! This will assuredly be in my regular rotation!!

  64. Cory Burns (verified owner)

I have some small batch stuff some h&S lots of variety even though I am new to pipes and transitioning from cigars. All I can say is WOW I felt like Gandalf the grey and could only feel as though I was feeling as Tolkien him self. Wonderful flavor(not developed enough to give notes) but creamy smooth no bite all day smoke. Tin note is the best ever. This will always remain in my rotation

  65. Joseph (verified owner)

Hands down my favorite Aromatic that I’ve tried. Not just a great aroma but such a good flavor. It is like a dessert with fresh baked sugar cookie notes.

  66. stacey.carlson1 (verified owner)

Yum! Tastes like it smells. Sugary and maple. Careful when packing, moistness makes relights necessary. Room note and taste worth the re lights. Love it. Will be ordering more.

  67. napotnik

Old Toby is a real treat. I bought the tobacco sampler for fun. The whole thing is Tolkien gimmicky, but well well worth it. I’m more of a Virginia No 1 kind of smoker, but thoroughly and absolutely enjoyed this aromatic as did those enjoying the room note around me, which is almost as important. I smoked this blend past the point of enjoyment. I’m tempted to rate 5 stars but need more time.

  68. Charlie Carroll (verified owner)

Needs a few relights but this doesn’t matter, the taste is consistently throughout the blend and is hands down my favourite aromatic. Somehow, and I don’t know why, I get this wonderful buttery after taste all the way through the smoke.
I feel like I’m gonna smoke 2oz of this very quickly and the wife is going to get made when a pound turns up next time…

    6/5

  69. redriverd (verified owner)

I cannot claim to have a wide experience with many types of tobacco. I am strictly an aromatic smoker, and I am just getting back in to pipe smoking after a forty year break. With that understood, I LOVE this blend. It is very mild and at the same time reliably flavorful all the way through the bowl. I have smoked it in four different briars and a cob, and it tastes the same (delicious) in all of them.

  70. Cris Neagu (verified owner)

I have found it. I have found a tobacco (and a tobacco maker) that can fill the sadness left by McClelland’s departure from the market. And that’s all I feel like I need to say about this.

  71. Dylbo

SO GOOD, “finest pipeweed this southfarthing” for a reason….
I’m fairly new to smoking tobacco, but this blend is my favorite as it has such great flavor and smells so good. Trying Rivendell next. Very pleased
