An impeccably structured blend. Featuring a foundation of sweet, tangy Virginias and cool burning burleys, a dash of Macedonian leaf is added to round out the mixture and add a hint of the exotic. The different leafs are then aged as one, in order to marry and harmonize flavor, prior to being pressed into a tantalizing flake.

This fine tobacco originally had no name. It was blended before the first World War especially for the Very Rev. Dr. John White, sometime minister of the Barony Kirk in Glasgow and Moderator of the General Assembly in Scotland in 1929. He introduced it to Stanley Baldwin, later Earl Baldwin, Prime Minister in 1923, 1924 and 1935. He liked it so much that regular supplies were sent down to him and it was he who suggested that it be called “Presbyterian Mixture”. As there continues to be controversy over the question of whether Presbyterian Mixture contains latakia, the following quote from page six of the blender’s 2008 catalogue should leave the matter settled: “Extraordinarily soft blend of finest US Virginia grades and a number of selected latakia leaf tips. Ideal mixture also for beginners with English tobaccos.” Originally blended for mass market by William P. Solomon, whose recipe it still follows.
An elegant blend of Red and Bright Virginias, Savinelli’s 140th Anniversary combines spicy Orientals with choice dark-fired leaf from Italy and is further infused with notes of citrus and wildflower for a captivating all-day smoking experience. The special dark-fired tobacco included in this indulgent mixture is a staple in Italian cigar production and is grown and double-fermented on a single farm in the Tuscan Tiber Valley region of Italy — a location celebrated for its long history and tradition of tobacco cultivation dating back to the 17th century. A complex blend that deftly marries flavors both spicy and sweet, Savinelli’s 140th Anniversary will appeal to a range of discerning pipe smokers.
Hot-pressed and ready rubbed Rustica is stoved, resulting in a smoothing of the bold leaf, but its familiar BBQ tang and floral spice are preserved, dynamically complementing the caramelized sweetness of the Stoved Virginia. The Oriental Katerini takes to the Cavendish process beautifully, offering herbal, woody undertones. The result is an exotic mélange with a vitality that reimagines what a stoved mixture can be.
Stoved—or Cavendish—tobaccos are often thought of as the vehicle for top flavoring. Though this is certainly a fine attribute, the wonderful characteristics imparted from the stoving process can easily be overlooked. Pipe Force illustrates just that with the stoving of two varietals for the first time, Rustica and Katerini.
The Latakia forward English mixture offers plenty of smoky flavor from the fired-cured leaf, which is artfully harmonized with floral, earthy stoved Rustica. A mixture of high-grade Virginias imparts a natural sweetness. Katerini, the sole oriental component, offers herb and spice notes bringing complexity and nuance to the favor profile.
