Jared Coles Pipes

Jared Coles is an American artisan pipe maker based in Visalia, California, widely regarded as one of the premier carvers on the contemporary American pipe-making scene. His work blends Danish and Japanese design sensibilities with a distinctly American creative energy, producing pipes that range from refined traditional shapes to striking avant-garde sculptural pieces.

Coles grew up in the orange groves of the eastern San Joaquin Valley and was homeschooled through high school. He went on to attend College of the Sequoias and later the University of California at Irvine, where he earned a degree in economics. It was during his junior year at UCI that he stumbled into the online world of artisan pipes, discovering the handmade work of makers like Jeff Gracik (J. Alan Pipes), Todd Johnson, Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and Takeo Arita — an encounter that would change the course of his life.

In 2009, Coles picked up his first pipe kit and began teaching himself the craft. That same year he met John Klose, a fellow pipe smoker with a shared interest in making, and the two began learning together. By 2011 they had established their own workshop under the name J&J Pipes, setting an ambitious standard: they wanted their work to be so consistent that collectors couldn’t tell which of the two had carved a given piece. In those formative years, Coles visited and spent time with veteran carvers Gracik and Johnson, refining his technique and deepening his understanding of the craft.

At the end of 2015, Coles and Klose amicably dissolved their partnership to pursue their own artistic paths. Launching his solo brand in 2016, Coles quickly established himself as a maker of exceptional range and quality. His atelier produces just 52 pipes per year — each one stamped with his logo, initials, the production year, and its annual number (e.g., “16-37” for the 37th pipe of 2016).

Coles works with carefully sourced and well-cured Mediterranean briar, hand-cut ebonite stems, and thoughtfully chosen accent materials including boxwood, citrus wood, and 23-karat gold leaf. His philosophy is one of restraint and intention — ornamentation serves the design rather than competing with it. He emphasizes elegance, flow of line, and what he describes as imbuing a sense of life into every pipe he creates.

His pieces are carried by leading retailers worldwide and are highly sought after by collectors. Those looking for early access to new work can join his Connoisseur’s List for priority acquisition, or commission a bespoke piece directly.
