Well I came back looking for more of this and found it is sold out! I will savor what I purchased because this blend has made me fall back in love with settling down for awhile and sipping a pipe! First note I could smell immediately is a rich caramel and it is insanely tasty and an enjoyable aromatic. I literally let it go out to write this review! I’m no expert and still a novice pipe smoker so I cannot explain the nuances like others can, what I do know is it’s a wonderful blend and The Country Squire never disappoints! I have tried many blends over the past few years but this one is an instant favorite and a joy! Happy New Year and I hope to see this blend available again in the future! So pleased!

Love it!
The best of “Old Toby.”
Mild sweet and delicious.
Great room note.
Three thumbs up.
Make us some more please!

This reminds me of Old Toby in how it’s a smooth, earthy, elegant smoke, but has a bit more sweetness to it which I love. The pouch note is a wonderful light chocolate with almost a hint of mint in the background. The taste remains earthy with a faint vanilla caramel sweetness over a deep, creamy, nutty, chocolatey background. Very well put together, I wish this was around more often!

I will second the others that compare this to “Old Toby”… I also got some fruitiness out of this. A nice creamy sweet smoke! Sad it’s not a normal production blend, but glad I was able to grab some this time.

Dark Holler is a most welcome member of the Fantasy South Series. First light brings a flush of sweetness followed by hints of caramel, vanilla and a distant creamy chocolate. As it burns down the flavor holds well throughout the life of the bowl. I was introduced to The Country Squire via the incredible Tombigbee, Riverboat Queen and White Rose. Dark Holler has earned its place in this fraternity. I look to the day when we are able to purchase this magical blend in larger quantities as I am hoping to gather a couple of pounds to cellar, smoke and most assuredly share.

I had a bowl of this today as soon as it arrived. I am not as good at writing out my thoughts and descriptions as the others that have reviewed this. But what I will say is that if they add this to the normally available lotr blends, I will be ordering it by the pound, regularly. Its amazing.

The Country Squire has done it again! This is a fantastic aromatic that maintains a great tobacco flavor. It’s pleasing to the taste buds as well as leaving a tremendous room note; the best of both worlds. NOW.. who do we have to petition to get this back in stock and into the permanent lineup??

This is really good stuff. I wouldn’t call myself a burley fan in particular. I gravitate more toward English blends and usually stay away from strong aromatics. I would say this flavoring is mild yet the tobacco is strong, a very nice combo. Wish it wasn’t a limited release, I could see myself ordering more of this.

I’m picky about my aromatics.
Since this came out I now constantly find myself comparing others against it. “It’s fine, but does it do anything for me that Dark Holler doesn’t?” And the answer is always no. I have had Many of the Squire aromatics, and for my taste, this stands above them all. Complex flavors from top to bottom. The coolest smoking blend.
I shared an oz of my purchase with my best friend and pipe smoking partner. He loves it. But it was a mistake.
More, please?

Another outstanding effort.
This will be in the regular rotation if it ever becomes a mainstay offering.

My favorite aromatic blend. I’m seriously missing this right now!

It’s time to add this year round, my friends.

I like very much your Fantasy South tobaccos; but the greatest of all for your store and all others is Dark Holler. I loved the sample and want MORE!
David –
My daughter’s boyfriend just sent me 2 ounces for my birthday (he kept 2 oz. for himself). I already liked him, but he’s now moved up to the top of the list. It’s everything they say it is. It’s my favorite of the Fantasy South line. It’s the easiest of them to pick out the flavors you’re expected to find (caramel, vanilla, a hint of apple, etc.).

This is my second review of this incredible blend. I gave my cousin 4 oz to enjoy. His words were beyond anything I could have imagined. “In my opinion that if love had a taste and smell this would be it.”
I agree….great job. Thank you.
PS….It’s my precious…….

So amazing. Like if a chocolate covered coconut 🥥 melted into a caramel pecan pie ❤️. So so delicious!

Was gifted a sample from a generous member of the PSD forum. This is yet another inspired blend from The Country Squire. It lights with ease, burns effortlessly, and delivers veritable clouds of cool smoke. To me, the bag note says “coconut” and the flavors are sweet and delicious. Please consider making this an everyday offering.

Dark Holler just soared to the top of my list. Not just on the rotation but firmly holding the top spot. I have not found a blend that has hooked me like this one. From bag note to light to end of the bowl I can’t find anything bad to say about it. I want to smoke it all day every day but I’m having to ration it. Please, please make this available full time. P.s. This blend is so good this is my first ever tobacco review.
Toby –
Great blend. It has the pedigree of Old Toby with no snickerdoodle taste but instead a light chocolate, slight cinnamon and baking spice taste. It is extremely smooth with a bit more punch in terms of boldness in flavor. I recently had a 2022 vintage alongside a 2024 and both showed consistent taste and the room note is a crowd pleaser! Sucks only being available on a limited basis but it keeps us coming back to our beloved Country Squire. Waiting for the ‘25 version

I decided to buy this this January and DH has become my favorite blend. Thanks for great burley blends. They’re not easy to come by.
Peter Handford –
I was given a sample of this at a pipe club early on in my pipe journey and it’s been on my list ever since! I CANNOT wait for the rerelease. Beautifully balanced, as can be expected from Squire, nutty, dark molasses, and baking spices will keep me returning every season! Thanks Squire

Tobbacco is good that’s all I will say. Wait all year, get in line for a 4 oz. Package and pay damn neat $9 an ounce. Only for the website to kick you off 4x and spend a fricken hour to get 4 oz. once a year! It’s not that good! I am done with the smoke and mirrors for this BS and aggravation for 4 oz. once a year! The rest of you sheep can follow this path, I am done!

The 2026 version of The Country Squire’s “Dark Holler” is an aromatic masterpiece. Right out of the bag, it greets you with an intoxicating aroma of caramel and baking spices, instantly reminiscent of a warm, sweet Mexican bakery.
The smoke itself is a complex journey through a “confectionary” landscape. I picked up distinct notes of toasted coconut, sugar, and marshmallows, beautifully balanced by deeper flavors of empanadas, café de olla, and the rich, earthy sweetness of piloncillo. This small batch release is exceptionally smooth and serves as the perfect, comforting beginning to the new year. I highly recommend grabbing some while it lasts.

I was one of the lucky ones who got this years batch of DH. As a relatively new smoker I will say it’s the mildest smoke I have ever had. No tounge bite and I smoked it until it was mostly ash and the smoke wasn’t even hot. My palate may not be refined as some or I can’t really savor all the tastes because of having had COVID. But, the smoke was light, the room note was pleasant (or so my wife told me) and all the things about a good tobacco made the bowl very relaxing. The bag had a terrific aroma, a chocolate/vanilla smell that was very nice and started the smoking experience. Over all it was worth the years wait to try it for the first time. The tobacconist at Country Squire get Two Thumbs Up…now I am a fan ready to get the 2027 batch on line.

I picked this up in store yesterday as a last second decision. I bought 4 or 5 other blends while I was there this one is my favorite hands down. I will definitely be buying more next time it is released
